My views on using the internet during the exam!

In class we discussed whether we should be able to use the internet at our exam, or not. Because of that, we were told to write about which sites we were going to use and if internet access will help us and why.

I personally think that internet will help us during the exam, but it will also make things harder for us.  It will be easier to write a trustworthy text or article because you can relate your facts to your sources with a little foot note at the end of the sentence or quote. And if we get an assignment which involves topics we don't know anything about the internet will help us in the right direction and make our text better, but the thing with internet and the sources on the internet is that they can be written by anyone.

Not only can the sources on internet be written by any person in the world, but also are todays youths in Norway familiar with the word plagiarism. It is extremely easy to read an article on the internet and find 3 or 4 good sentences in an article and click copy - paste. That's the biggest danger with internet use, the text could be compound by different sentences written by other people, and is therefore not actually the individuals own text.

When it comes to which sites we can trust or not I think that newspaper- and encyclopedia sites are the most trustworthy. In Norway we have this site called www.snl.no which is the "book-encyclopedia", but just on the internet, and is therefore one of the most secure source you can use.

If we are aloud to use the internet I will be very careful with which sites and pages I use to seek information, and I also recommend other students to be careful. Its not clever to use all your exam time researching, so its important to prepare some sites that are trustworthy and maybe make a little summary of which sites that can be used for different themes you may have on your exam.

Good luck!

Shopaholic Abroad

Shopaholic Abroad is one of the books in the Shopaholic series. It is an adventure novel with a lot of love. It is written by Sophie Kinsella (to the left) and follows the story of Becky Bloomwooed and everything her life does to her, through good and bad.

Life is really good for Becky Bloomwood. She has a boyfriend named Luke and a job she loves giving financial advice on the TV show "Morning Coffee". She has a good relationship with her bank manager, Derek Smith, but when he retires and her boyfriend Luke wants to make his company big in New York, big changes are in store for Becky.

Becky is living her fabulous life in New York with Luke and loves all the new stores she discovers everyday. Becky is spending a lot of money, but isn't seeing  any problems ahead because of her safe and secure job at Morning Coffee and also she has a new book coming out. But then the unthinkable thing happens. She wakes up like she always does and goes out to get her paper. When she opens the "Daily World" her name is all over the paper. There is a big photo and an article which reveals her high debts and calls her a frog for having so much problems financially while giving other people advice on how to manage their money. This causes several problems for Becky, and especially the starting fight between her and Luke is affecting her extremely.

The reason why their relationships almost breaks is because the Bank of London is Luke's company's biggest client, and rumors are starting that he will lose them as clients because of Becky's secret financial situation. Not only is there problems in her relationship, but also Morning Coffee are firing her from her job. She can't take it anymore and returns home to her roommate and best friends Suze, while Luke stays in New York and their relationship comes to an apparent end. Becky becomes depressed and her friend Suze is trying everything to make her happier, but nothing works. Until one day.

Becky has been shopping her entire life and has a million different things she never have worn or even looked at after she brought it home from the store. She therefore decides to sell all the things she has and decides that she wants to move back to the U.S and start to work on Barney's. Before she does that she goes to Luke's office in London to pick up a package for her delivered there. When she walks into his office she overhears a conversation between two of Luke's employees.  She discovers that the two of them are planning to steal all of Luke's clients and start up on their own. She doesn't want to talk to Luke but she contacts his colleague and tells him everything.

When that's done she is heading of to the airport to move to New York and start a new life. At the airport, Luke turns up and say that he knows it all because Michael have told him everything. He begs her to stay and work at his company, Becky tells him that she doesn't want to settle down at a job she doesn't want, and leaves him for New York.

Some time later, Becky is working as a personal shopper at Barney's, when Luke shows up as a costumer and apologizes for everything. Will they maybe end up together again?

The Great Debaters

How do the debaters prepare for debates?

Before every  debate, the debaters prepared themselves by checking out every possible information about their subject. They also had to agree which way they wanted to start their debate, but they seemed to have a hard time agreeing. Before the last debate, we saw them prepare as they have never done before. They argued and were mad, but finally they found a solution and won the debate.

Who is the main character?

The main characters were of course the debaters and their teacher. The debaters were:

Henry Lowe - played by Nate Parker
Samantha Booke -played by Jurnee Smollett
James Farmer Jr. - playes by Denzel Withtaker

And their teacher Melvin B. Tolson played by Denzel Washington.

If you want to see the trailer of the movie, here it is:

Roald Dahl's "Lamb to the Slaughter"

After we read the short story and saw the short film we had to write two questions each. I am now going to answer to of the questions who have been asked, from my point of view.

Why was it so smart to let the policemen eat the lamb?

It was extremely smart to let them eat the lamb because without them having any clue, they ate up all the evidence, murder weapon and clues that could lead back to Mrs. Maloney as a murderer.

How would you describe Mary Maloney as a person?

I think Mary is a very hard-trying person. She really wants the perfect marriage and both gives and does everything for her husband. The rutine is the same every single day. She opens the door for him, kisses him, makes him food and so on. She was in my eyes like Bree van de Kamp from the tv-show Desperate Housewives if you ever have seen it. She was a person full of love, but as everything becomes a rutine, it is hard to see the love and kindness behind every action.

The Thing Around Your Neck and Cell One

I am now going to present two paragraphs from each story, and why they are important for the plot and development for the character.

THE THING AROUND YOUR NECK

The paragraph
Why
Plot
So when he asked you, in the dimness of the restaurant after you recited the daily specials, what African country you were from, you said Nigera and expected him to say that he had donated money to fight AIDS down in Botswana. But he asked if you were Yoruba or Igbo, becuase you didn't have a Fulani face. You were surprised - you thought he must be a professor or anthropology at the state university, a little young in his late twenties or so, but who was to say? Igbo, you said. He asked your name and said Akunna was pretty. He did not ask what it meant, fortunately, becuase you were sick of how people said, " 'Father's Wealth'? You mean, like, your father will actually sell you to a husband?"
I chose this because I think this tells a a lot about how this girl all the time thought he would answer differently than he did. The story is about how she  thinks every American is the same, and this proves her wrong.
Development of character
You said no the following four days to going out with him, because you were uncomfortable with the way he looked at your face, that intense, consuming way he looked at your face that made you say goodbye to him but also made you reluctant to walk away. And then, the fifth night, you panicked when he was not standing at the door after your shift. Your prayed for the first time in a long time and when he came up behind you and said hey, you said yeas, you would og out with him, even before he asked. You were scared he would not as again.
This paragraph shows that she changes. She is willing to give the American guy a chance. When the panicking came because he didn't stand there, she understood that she really wanted to try this out and that she might have gotten a good eye for this American guy.

CELL ONE

The paragraph
Why
Plot
"How much did they give you for my gold?" my mother asked him. And when he told her, she placed both hands on her head and cried, "Oh! OH" Chi m egbuo m! My God has killed me!" It was like she felt that the least he could have done was get a good price. I wanted to slap her. My father asked Nnamabua to write a report: how he had sold the jewelry, what he had spent the money on, whom he had spent it. I didn't think Nnamabia would tell the truth, and I don't think my father thought he would, either, but he liked reports, my professor father, he liked things written down and nicely documented. Besides, Nnamabia was seventeen, with a carefully tended beard. He was in that space between secoondary school and university and was too old for caning. What else could my father have done? After Nnamabia wrote the report, my father filed it in the steel drawer in his study where he kept our school papers.
I think this is a relevant paragraph because you can get a hint of how all the characters are and what has happened. You can't understand a whole story from one paragraph but this helps you understand that the mother is a person who loves her son maybe too much and can't get mad at him, the sister is jealous because her brother can get away with everything and the father is a organized and serious person. You can also understand that the son has done something who has affected his mother pretty bad.

Development for character
"Yesterday the policemen asked the old man if he wanted a free bucket of water. He said yes. So they told him to take this clothes off and parade the corridor. My cell mates were laughing. But some of them said it was wrong to treat an old man like that." Nnamabia paused, his eyes distant. "I shouted at the policeman. I said the old man was innocent and ill and if they kept him here they would never find his son because he did not even know where his son was. They said I should shut up immediately or they would take me to Cell One. I didn't care. I didn't shut up. So they pulled me out and beat me and took me to Cell One. "
I chose this paragraph because you can read how Nnamabia have grown as a person. He doesn't care about himself anymore, but care more about his inmate friend who he feels sorry for.

The Life in Norway

In our world today the most accurate number of countries is 196. Every country rules in their own way and no one is 100% similar. Even though Europe has created the EU and we have the U.S.A in America, no country is the exact same.  If you wonder how things are in Norway for me as a student, I am now going to write a little bit about the way of schooling, economics, language and a bit of youth politics.

Since I were 5 years I have been going to school after 4 years in kindergarten. The first school we goes to is a school we call primary school which contains the first seven years of our schooling. After that we starts at a new school, the primary school. Here we are in 3 years and it is here we first are graded. Our grades goes from 1 to 6, where 6 is the best and 1 is fail. This continues over to another three years at high school.

The economy in Norway is pretty good, and especially here were I live. My "state" is the state with the highest average income and we live in good places. We have a very good life here in Norway compared to many other countries. Someone thinks our taxes are unnecessary and way to high, but I think it is pretty smart considering all the advantages we get from it.

"Arbeiderpartiet" is the name of our leading party and our prime minister Jens Stoltenberg is the leader of AP. We vote every four years for who we want to lead our country and in 2013 we are voting again. As it looks now, I think Arbeiderpartiet will rule another four years because people in Norway are a little bit afraid of changes. I am pretty  happy with how things are now, but maybe when I get older, my meanings change! Its just to wait and see!
